Today we have Toothless and bonus Hiccup of How to Train Your Dragon fame. Although it’s not Disney, I thought that doing something complicated would be nice for a change. 

Toothless

Binomial: Pyroplasmadraco nocturnalis

Translation: Nocturnal dragon of plasma fire

Description: Possibly the last of his kind, Toothless is a Night Fury, an elusive dragon species with the special ability to produce superheated explosive plasma flame. He is shot down by Hiccup, a Viking human, but the two slowly bond and forge a relationship, culminating in the integration of dragons into the culture of Berk.

Evolution: Dragons are most likely an early offshoot of the dinosauriformes that developed flight after being isolated for long periods of time in a marine environment. Order Draconiformes, class Pyrovolidae. Phylogeny after Dragons: A Fantasy Made Real.

Movie: How to Train Your Dragon (DreamWorks, 2010) and How to Train Your Dragon 2 (DreamWorks, 2014)

BTS: Second hardest skeletal ever! I know this isn’t the best, I was a bit rushed when making it. I don’t quite like Hiccup in this picture, he looks a bit like Snoutlout to be honest.

Verdict: Possible.

In an alternate universe where such evolutionary events did occur, it is perfectly possible that some early dinosauriformes could have independently evolved the ability to fly and breathe fire, given the appropriate environmental stimuli. Given the expanse of time involved, the sentience shown by Toothless is certainly possible.

Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III

Trinomial: Homo sapiens sapiens

Translation: Wise (wise) man

Description: Hiccup, son of Stoick the Vast and Valka, is a young and socially outcast Viking human residing in the village of Berk. After shooting down and encountering the Night Fury Toothless, his perspective of dragons is dramatically transformed- he realizes that dragons are merely animals like humans themselves and causes an upheaval in the entire village after being unable to kill a dragon. He lost his right leg while battling the Red Death (future skeletal) to free a nest of dragons near Berk from its control. Hiccup, by the time of the second movie, has become an explorer, charting unknown territories around the globe.

Evolution: Humans evolved from apelike ancestors approximately 3 million years ago, with the first definitive specimens of Homo appearing circa 2.4 million years ago. Since then, humans have evolved great intelligence, bipedalism, and speech, establishing the first known civilizations of the animal kingdom in a global radiation. Order Primates, family Hominidae.
